Event Date: 05/27/2023
Event Location: Four Chicken Gallery, 432 Cortland Avenue, San Francisco, CA, 94110

Motanka is an ancient protective object in Ukrainian culture. Much more than a simple doll, motanka serves as a family talisman and a powerful personal totem.

Workshop size is limited to 15 people. All materials are included, as well and refreshments and good vibes. For tickets and details, please go to: https://tinyurl.com/59xnj7m9

What exactly will we be creating?

There are different types of motankas in existence. The dolls we will make in this workshop are called Zernyanka, from Ukrainian “zerno” meaning “grain”. Such dolls symbolize a prosperous and full life and they are filled with, you guessed it, grain! As well as dried lavender for calm and peace in the home and the heart. A protective charm that is meant to bring abundance to their creator (or recipient!), Zernyanka’s honorable place is in the heart of the home – the kitchen. They make unique gifts and magical keepsakes, while the doll-making process itself is mindful and healing.

Teaching artist Genie Gonchar will share with you the history and significance of this meaningful artistic practice. This workshop is easy, but it is best suited for adults and teens.
