Motanka is an ancient protective object in Ukrainian culture. Much more than a simple doll, back in the day, motanka served as a family talisman and a powerful protective totem. In modern society these objects may have lost some of their magical meaning, but remain popular as elements of decor, or colorful souvenirs. At Art of Ukraine we breathe the magic back into motanka making! Creating this kind of powerful object is an exciting and healing practice for adults and children. The result helps restore ancient traditions and leaves you with a unique talisman and keepsake.

Teaching artist Genie Gonchar will teach you everything there is to know about the history and significance of this meaningful artistic practice. The workshop is suitable for younger children, as well as anyone who is interested in minimalist yarn doll creation. Participants take their Motankas home!

This workshop is part of SUPERBLOOM: Art of Ukraine 3-day Pop-Up Exhibit and Event Series.
